How much does a developer cost in 2026: employee, freelancer, agency or subscription
Employee, freelancer, agency or subscription: the full monthly cost of a developer in France in 2026, with public figures, and which model fits which situation.
You have a product that needs to evolve, and a question that comes back at every budget: how much does a developer cost, really? Not the salary on a job ad, the full cost, the one that leaves the bank account every month. Here are the four ways to pay for development in France in 2026, with the public figures of the moment.
According to the WeLoveDevs salary barometer, built on the salary expectations of more than 20,000 developers, the median salary sought by a developer in France in 2026 is €44,000 gross a year. The top 30% seek €50,000 or more, the top 10% €60,000 or more. That gross figure is only the starting point.
40 to 45%
in employer contributions on top of gross pay, as an order of magnitude, for a developer with executive status at €50,000 a year
Urssaf, Keobiz, 2026
Employer contributions are added to gross pay to form the employer cost. For a senior at €50,000 gross, count about €71,000 to €72,500 a year, roughly €6,000 a month: that is the order of magnitude given by the Urssaf simulator. And that is not all: add recruiting (an agency bills a percentage of the annual salary, and hiring an executive takes two to three months on average), tooling (machine, licences, test hosting), and above all management. A lone developer with no tech lead to review their code makes decisions nobody challenges.
Another point often forgotten: a developer has one main skill. The same product needs front-end, back-end, design, infrastructure, sometimes AI. The employee does what they know; the rest is learned, outsourced, or waits.
The Malt rate barometer gives an average day rate of €575 for an experienced developer active on the platform. The rate rises with experience: €317 on average between zero and two years, €436 between three and seven, €575 between eight and fifteen, €672 beyond. Malt's city averages put Paris slightly higher, on samples Malt flags as limited. Rare profiles go higher: a cybersecurity expert bills €720 on average.
€10,350
for a full month of 18 days at the average rate of €575; about €5,200 half-time
Malt, 2026
The freelancer has two strengths: they start fast when they are free, and they cost nothing when you have nothing to give them. They have two limits that do not show in the rate. Availability first: the good freelancer is already booked, and you wait for the end of their assignment. Coordination next: you scope, you prioritise, you test and you approve, or you pay them for that role on top.
The day rate is also misleading on one point: it bills days, not outcomes. A freelancer who uses AI well delivers faster, but their rate does not drop. The honest comparison is about what is delivered and approved at the end of the month.

How much does a development agency cost?
An agency does not sell days, it sells a project: a scoped perimeter, a price, a date. That is its strength when the product is whole and the scope stable. As a reference, Figue's fixed-price projects go from €990 ex VAT for a landing page to €12,990 for an internal tool, €19,990 for a SaaS and €24,990 for a mobile app, scope agreed before work starts.
The real cost of an agency shows in what happens after signing. Every need that was not in the quote becomes an amendment, with its scoping, pricing and delay. A living product generates needs every week; at that pace, the quoting machinery costs more in time than in money.
Development as a service pays a team monthly, at a fixed price, for requests delivered one at a time. Public offers range from about €1,000 to €6,000 a month for one slot, depending on where the team is based, the commitment required and the scope covered. At Figue Unlimited: €1,990 per month ex VAT at public price, lower launch pricing for the first clients, no commitment, with French engineers augmented with AI.

per month ex VAT for one slot at Figue Unlimited at public price, less than a senior freelancer two days a week
figue.ai, 2026
What the price includes at Figue: scoping, development and design, integrations, AI and automations, review and go-live, a dedicated point of contact, two catch-ups a month, and the workspace. What it does not include: third-party costs (hosting, licences, APIs), on-call cover, and a whole product built from scratch.
The trade-off is clear, and you should read it before comparing: one active request at a time per slot. Unlimited describes the number of requests you submit, not the volume delivered or the speed. If two workstreams must move in parallel, you need a second slot, at the public rate.
Employee, freelancer, agency or subscription: which costs least?

Two readings. In cost per month, the subscription is the cheapest for a continuous need, the freelancer the cheapest for a one-off need. In cost per approved delivery, everything depends on who reviews: a lone developer, salaried or freelance, with no review, produces code you will pay for twice.

How to choose for your situation?
The right model does not depend on the listed price but on three questions: is the need continuous or one-off, do you have someone to steer, and does the product already exist?
And if you hesitate between two, pick the one that is easiest to stop. A no-commitment subscription can be tried for a billing period; a hire is much harder to undo.

Frequently asked questions
The cost of a developer, in questions
What we get asked when the budget lands on the table.
How much does a salaried developer cost per month in France?
For a developer with executive status at €50,000 gross a year, about €71,000 to €72,500 a year including employer contributions, roughly €6,000 a month, before recruiting, tooling and management. At €44,000 gross, the median expectation in the 2026 WeLoveDevs barometer, the Urssaf simulator gives about €5,100 a month.
What is a freelance developer's day rate in 2026?
Around €575 a day on average for an experienced developer according to the Malt barometer, €317 early in a career and €672 beyond fifteen years of experience. Cybersecurity experts bill €720 on average.
Is a development subscription cheaper than an employee?
Often, yes: from about €1,000 to €6,000 a month depending on the offer, against about €6,000 for a senior employee. But it is not the same thing: the subscription gives one active request at a time, delivered by a shared team; the employee gives one person full-time. If you have full-time work and someone to steer it, the employee remains relevant.
Has AI lowered the cost of development?
It lowered production time on many tasks, not day rates or salaries. Where the cost really drops is in models that sell a verified result rather than days: a subscription whose team produces faster can charge less. Someone still has to review.
What about a developer abroad?
Cheaper on paper, and more expensive in coordination: time zones, language, scoping, review. Some companies that tried come back to a team in France, on subscription or freelance, for the time they no longer spend explaining.
